Lieut.-Colonel George Oliver Moorhead, has fallen in action while in command of the Nyasaland Contingent of the Union Expeditionary Force. Colonel Moorhead was the eldest son of the late Brigade-Surgeon G. A. Moorhead. He was educated at Clongowes, at Malines, and at Edinburgh University. He was practising medicine in the Transvaal when the last Boer War broke out. He was commandeered by the Boers, and placed in charge of a field ambulance. Seizing an opportunity of escape, he joined the British forces, and was given charge of a hospital. He was at Colenso and other actions, and received the Queen's and King's medals with clasps. When the present war broke out he abandoned the medical profession for military work, joining the Union Defence Force, and rising rapidly in rank. He was formerly in command of the Northern Mounted Rifles. He assisted in quelling the South African Rebellion, and went through the German West African Campaign, accompanying Generals Smuts and Van der Venter in their great push across the desert. At the close of this campaign he volunteered for further service, and received an important command in connection with operations in the theatre where he has now met his death. The death of his brother, Brevet Colonel A. H. Moorhead, A.D.M.S., while on sick leave, was here recorded with great regret only two months ago.
