    OBITUARY - George Sharrar, The Toledo Blade, Aug. 25, 1982 George R. Sharrar, 75, formerly of the 2000 block of Barrows Street, died Monday in St. Charles Hospital. He had lived the last six years in the Cherry Hill Nursing Home. He was a truck driver two years for the former Page Dairy Co., retiring in 1949 due to a disability. Surviving is his half brother, Morrell Wissinger. Services wlil be at 10:30 a.m. Tursday in the Walter Mortuary.

In 1907, in the year that George R. Sharrar was born, in October, over a 3 week period, the New York stock exchange fell almost 50% from the previous year's high mark. Public panic ensued and there were runs on banks since the U.S. was in the middle of a recession. J.P. Morgan offered his own fortune to back the banks and he was followed by other financiers. This temporarily shored up the banking system, stopping the immediate panic. All of this led to the creation of the Federal Reserve.

In 1944, when he was 37 years old, on December 16th, The Battle of the Bulge began in the Ardennes forest on the Western Front. Lasting for a little over a month, the battle began with a surprise attack by Germany on the Allied forces The U.S. suffered their highest casualties of any operation in World War II - 89,000 were casualties, around 8,600 killed - but Germany also severely depleted their resources and they couldn't be replaced.
