George Ridgway 1863 - 1904

George Ridgway was born in 1863 to Sophia (Cadd) Ridgway and Anthony Ridgway, and had siblings Charlotte Bould (Ridgeway), William Ridgway, Mark Ridgway, Susannah Ridgway, John Ridgway, James Ridgway, Sophia Charlotte (Ridgway) Salter, and Thomas Ridgway. He married Ethel Annie (Pruden) Ridgway, and had a child John Ridgway. George Ridgway died at age 40 years old on June 2, 1904 at The Royal Melbourne Hospital 300 Grattan St, in Parkville, Melbourne City County, VIC Australia.

In 1863, in the year that George Ridgway was born, on January 1st, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation made the abolition of slavery in the Confederate states an official war goal. It also immediately freed 50,000 slaves, with the rest freed as Union armies advanced into Confederate states. The Proclamation wasn't a Congressional law - it was an Executive Order.

In 1872, he was merely 9 years old when on May 22nd, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Amnesty Act of 1872. The Act restored full civil rights to secessionists, including about 150,000 former slaves who had fought in the Confederate Army. About 500 former Confederate sympathizers were not allowed their full civil rights.
