George Sherman Hawk was born on August 8, 1867 to Jacob E. Hawk and Sarah Hawk, and had siblings Della Nora Hawk and Anna D.Hawk. He married Ida Mae (Hammond) Hawk. He married Debbie K. Hawk, and they had children Clifford Collins Hawk and Sarah Belle (Hawk) Bacon. George Hawk died at age 77 years old on April 29, 1945, and was buried at Spring Cemetery in Springboro, Crawford County, Pennsylvania United States.

In 1867, in the year that George Sherman Hawk was born, on January 8th, African-American men were given the right to vote in the District of Columbia when Congress overrode President Andrew Johnson's veto. This was the first place in the U.S. to give African Americans the right to vote.

In 1878, he was just 11 years old when on June 15th, photographer Eadweard Muybridge - at the request of Leland Stanford - produced the first sequence of stop-motion still photographs. Stanford contended that a galloping horse had all four feet off the ground. Only photos of a horse at a gallop would settle the question and, using 12 cameras and a series of photos, Muybridge settled the question: Stanford was right. Muybridge's use of several cameras and stills led to motion pictures.
