  • Introduction

    George Tepo was born to Alexander Tepo )1876 - 1942) and Mary Behun (1887 - 1938). His father was born in Austria, as was his mother. He had five siblings: three sisters and two brothers. George married Ethel Lorraine Greene (1922 - 2006) on July 28, 1945 in Petersburg, Pennsylvania. A veteran of World War II, George Tepo served in the United States Army beginning in June of 1942.

In 1920, in the year that George Tepo was born, in September, a bomb exploded in the J.P. Morgan bank building in New York City, killing 30 people immediately - 8 later died due to their injuries - and injuring another 200. Killing more people than the 1910 bombing of the LA Times (the deadliest terrorist act up until then), no one took responsibility and the perpetrators were never found. Italian anarchists were suspected of the bombing.

In 1948, at the age of 28 years old, George was alive when on January 30th, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi by a member of a Hindu nationalist party who thought that Gandhi was too accommodating to Muslims. The man, Nathuram Godse, shot Gandhi 3 times. He died immediately. The shooter was tried, convicted, and hung in November 1949.
