  • Ethnicity & Family History

The story that I heard my entire life was that his mother, father and three sisters left somewhere from central Italy, worked their way to Portugal, Spain and finally a ship to South America. From there they continued on to the United States, not getting off in NY, but went further on to Massachusetts. My father was born in the United States shortly after his parents arrival. So he is of Italian origin, but his last name was changed to Viera, a town in Portugal. My understanding is that his surname was even changed. I learned many names were changed either by accident, laziness, or on purpose. The Irish looked down upon Italians like dirt back then. Could never find out what his real last name was.
  • Nationality & Locations

    Of Italian descent.
  • Military Service

    Not a Veteran.
  • Professional Career

"Tom", a nickname, was a chauffeur at one time but his main job was in construction working with pick and shovel, digging ditches to lay pipe in Long Island. In the winter, he was laid off and drove a cab. Tom also worked for a Furrier.
  • Personal Life & Family

His birth name is Anthony George Viera. According to my dad, after he was born in Massachusetts, his mom died and his father left them at an orphanage. My sister remembers him telling her at one time that he ran away from the orphanage because they beat him and made him do things that he did not want to do. The only story we heard was they made him kill chickens for food, which he didn't like doing. He worked his way down to NY by sleeping in construction pipes or ditches. He hitch hiked and did odd jobs to earn some money for food. He didn't have any formal education, but I remember him reading newspapers and magazines from cover to cover. He was always a quiet man, which he likely became that way from being told to keep quiet at the orphanage. Not certain where he met my mother and that's pretty much all I know about his past.

2 Memories, Stories & Photos about George

My Father...
His birth name was ANTHONY GEORGE VIERA (nickname, Tom). He told me he changed his name upon request for his new wife. He also told me he met and stayed with Roselyn to keep him from ending up out on the street. She supported him, purchased his clothes and went on trips and cruises. She was happy to have husband again to do her bidding, and he was happy to not end up on the street.
