In 1847, in the year that George Washington Welch was born, on July 1st, the first official postage stamps were issued in the US (not in the world - that was the UK). They were a nickel and a dime and showed Ben Franklin and George Washington.

In 1850, on September 9th, in the middle of the Gold Rush, California was admitted to the US as the 31st state. Previously the western part of Alta California, the state, by itself, is now has the 6th largest economy in the world when compared to other countries.

In 1897, on July 17th, the Klondike Gold Rush began when the first successful prospectors returned to Seattle after mining in the Yukon. They arrived on the ships Excelsior and Portland, bringing vast quantities of gold - over $32,000,000 in today's money - and everyone rushed to become rich in the Yukon.

In 1907, the showman Florenz Ziegfeld introduced his Ziegfeld Follies. Ziegfeld was inspired by the Folies Bergère of Paris and the show was a step up from the then current vaudeville shows. The top entertainers of the time played in the Follies but the stars were the Ziegfeld girls - beautiful chorus girls in elaborate costumes. For almost a quarter of a century, the Ziegfeld follies were the toast of Broadway.

In 1983, "crack" cocaine was developed in the Bahamas and spread to the United States. Previously, cocaine had been cut with other substances, diluting it. Crack was 80% pure and therefore was more addictive. It was also cheaper, making it more easily available to low income neighborhoods.
