Born Halluin, France 21 July 1918. Grew up in Menen, West Flanders, Belgium mostly with his grandparents. left school at 13, to work in a textile mill in Northern France and later in the electricity company. During this time was a keen cyclist and sponsored by local bicycle maker. Conscripted into Belgian army before the outbreak of second world war and fought all way to Dunkirk. Unable to get to the beaches and try for England he then attempted escape through France to Spain. Captured by Spanish, initially imprisoned and then returned. After D-Day, escaped to UK and enlisted, joining No 10 Commando and trained in Achnacary, Scotland. met Joan Doreen Kemp at Junction pub in Polgate in 1944. Served in Northern Germany at end of war and during occupation. Married Joan Kemp 22 April 1946 and returned to Belgium first serving in Belgian army. Lack of career progression and opportunities meant he left army and works for a while in Menen and Mouscron area of Belgium. Fist daughter born in Belgium in 1949. Early 1954, whole family returned to live in the UK and later second daughter born. Settled eventually in Hastings and worked at the gypsum mines in Robertsbridge area. Took British citizenship in early 1960s and first son born 1963. Live the rest of his life in Hastings, retiring from British Gypsum in 1983. Georges enjoyed travelling to Scotland a place he loved immensely from the very first time he went there in 1944. Incredable physical health right into his early eighties, his health then deteriorated following a series of strokes and he died in Hastings on 26 January 2007 aged 88. His ashes are in a marked spot in the Baptist church graveyard in Great Missenden,, Buckinghamshire next to his beloved grand daughter Sarah who predeceased him aged 13. Joan's ashes, who died on 28 May 2013 lie next to him.
