    Lieutenant Gerhard Dittmann was a pilot of a Messerschmitt Bf 110G-4 with the 12th Nachtjagdgeschwader 1 in World War II. He took off from Leeuwarden Air Base on August 18, 1943 and was shot down. His plane went down in the Dutch Wadden Sea near the Marrum. The radio operator Unteroffizier Karl Theophil Bundschuh (born 18.12.1922 in Ulm) also fell on this mission. Buried in the German military cemetery at Ysselsteyn (grave site AR-4-77), Holland. German Bf 110 night fighter crashed from high altitude near sea wall. - Aircraft: Messerschmitt Bf 110 - Wednesday, August 18, 1943, time 0:15 a.m. - Serial number: 5479, registration: G9 + FZ (belonged to: 12/NJG1 Leeuwarden). Crew: Leutnant Gerhard Dittmann - pilot, 20 KIA Sergeant Karl Theophil Bundschuh - radio operator, 20 KIA Shortly before junction 2, a German night fighter crashed for unknown reasons. The German version of the story is that the aircraft was shot down by the fighter of No. 141 Sq. flown by F/O H.E. White and radio operator F/O M.S. Allan of the British RAF when it was taking fire from an English aircraft. Chief Constable Bauke Meijer saw the plane hurtling toward the ground on fire in a steep glide. On impact with the ground, the plane exploded and burned out. Meijer, who had biked with his colleague to the crash site near the seawall below Marrum, could not get to the wreckage because of the exploding munitions. Moments later, the Germans arrived from the base and the policemen were sent away. While leaving, they still found the body of one of the crew members in the grass, which had been thrown out of the plane. This was the 20-year-old pilot Gerhard Dittmann. He was first buried in Leeuwarden and later moved to the German military cemetery at Ysselsteyn. Radio operator Unteroffizier Karl Theophil Bundschu washed up on the Danish island of Mandö on September 28. He was buried in Esbjerg. According to records Lieutenant Gerhard Dittmann, , shot down two American Boeing B-17 bombers on July 25, 1943, northwest of Vlieland and July 26, 1943, near Helgoland.
