  • Introduction

Dad was the first child of my paternal grandparents, Albert Bodt and Aaltje Groeneveldt Bodt. He survived World War II in Holland during the German occupation, and was active in the Dutch Resistance. He met his future wife, my mother in 1943 and they were we on October 24, 1945. He was a loving father and husband. He worked for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines until 1956 when we immigrated to the U.S. He had come to the U.S. as a technical representative for KLM for the purchase of Lockheed Constellation aircraft. He decided to emigrate to the U.S. when her returned to the Netherlands. We arrived in New York 2 years later and took a train to California where he worked in aerospace, eventually ending up at CalTech/JPL in Pasadena. He retired after I graduated medical school and lived another 28 years, during which he enjoyed his grandchildren, traveling to Europe on several occasions and his favorite pastime, reading his books. My mother, Jeanne, developed a blood dyscrasia at age 77 for which she was medicated. She had a stroke in 2001, which limited her mobility and affected her speech slightly. In 2006, Dad fell and broke his hip. He became significantly demented overnight and remained so for the rest of his life. This was a stress on my mother. His dementia became worse as time went on and toward the end of his life he had difficulty remembering our names. Mom had another stroke in early February of 2010, progressing over a period of three weeks. She passed away at age 88 on Feb 27, 2010. Dad was so demented that he barely recognized what had happened. He developed pneumomia at age 93 years and four months and passed away on January 22, 2011, eleven months after Mom. We miss them both terribly, but it was their time to go.
