Gilbert Munro died at age 76 years old on August 15, 1876 in Newstead, Mount Alexander Shire County, VIC, and was buried in Newstead.

Gilbert was born in Scotland in 1799 to William Munro (born about 1775) and Mary N Patterson (born about 1775). He had several brothers, William, Hugh and Donald.

Gilbert was a farmer in Scotland. He married Catherine Ross (b26/5/1805 Kincardineshire d30/4/1879, Campbelltown, Victoria, Australia. They had 8 children William b1827 Isabella b1828 David b1830 George b1833 Thomas b1836 Mary b1838 Alexander 1840 Johanna b1843 They arrived in Victoria on the Ship Wanata in Sep 1860. William and David had come ahead of the family at the start of the gold rush in Victoria in the early 1850s and made enough money to bring the family out. However, two of the children (Isabella and George) who were young adults by then died in Scotland before the rest of the family came to Australia.
