In 1926, in the year that Gladys Markin was born, on November 15th, NBC was founded. It was the U.S.'s first major broadcast network. Ownership of the network was split between RCA (a majority partner at 50%), its founding corporate parent General Electric (which owned 30%), and Westinghouse (which owned the remaining 20%).
Did you know?
In 1934, Gladys was only 8 years old when on July 22nd, gangster John Dillinger was killed in Chicago. His gang had robbed banks and police stations, among other charges, and he was being hunted by J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI - although many in the public saw him as a "Robin Hood". A madam from a brothel in which he was hiding became an informer for the FBI and, after a shootout with FBI agents, Dillinger was shot and died.

House dresses for the morning, afternoon dresses for going out, glamorous evening dresses and fur . . . women's fashion was expanding in the 1930's. During the 1930's, women still made their own clothing (lots of examples below, including a real sack dress), but manufactured dresses also came into their own and were actually cheaper. A dress for 49 cents - Really? That’s under $8.00 in today’s dollars! Discover 1930's fashion - a beautiful time for dressing and one that still influences designers today.
