Glen E Hatchel's History: 1932 - 2007

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

He was the youngest of 4 kids. My grandma Lillie May the oldest, then Wilburt "Bill", Ruby, then Glen Everet (unsure of spelling the middle name). Parents were born in the 1800's. His mom Feb.3,1895 Florence E. Arrasmith, sometimes written Arrowsmith, part Blackfoot Indian married, Wilburt Hatchel, sometimes spelled with two "L's" but Glen said he hated that spelling because it had the word hell in it so they used one L for Hatchel. Grandpa Hatchel died Feb. 1956 right before my mom's wedding in June of that year, (mom wore a beautiful blue satin dress that Grandpa Hatchel bought her as it was the last thing he got her). Grandma Florence died when I was 15, Feb. 7, 1983.They are buried in Atchison, KS. He worked at KU Medical center till he retired, an upstanding citizen. He later married Rita Walters in the early 70's and adopted her 2 daughters, Lisa & Amy whom he loved. Lisa passed away in the 1990's, due to a sinus infection, he was devastated & tried taking care of her daughter. He also had kids with Rita, Rachel, Sarah, & Eddie. They all lived in the K.C. area. I tried seeing him a few yrs. before he died, we were passing through KC to see my hubby's folks in St. Louis. We talked on the phone, he wanted to meet us but kept getting lost. We asked to meet him & he wanted to drive to us instead. We couldn't wait another day as we had to get to another town then back home. Mom wrote him every year and talked on the phone with him. She was unable to see Glen when he died, mom's brother Richard, aka Rocci, visited Glen and spoke to him about the Lord on the phone before Glen passed away. Oh, his elder br. Bill was a WW2 veteran who had mental illness the latter yrs. of his life. He took off from the family & lived in the KC area as a homeless man sometimes till he would take his meds & come to his senses. He was discoverd at the age of 74 dead in his bed, his land lady discovered him because he was late on his rent, she said he was never late on his rent. They notified Glen. Glen tried to get him buried VA but they only provided the spot & wanted thousands for burial still. He had Bill cremated & interred sometime in 1996. Bill's passing is dated as November 5th, 1996. Bill was once very close to my Grandma Lillie as they were not even a yr. apart in age. Glen was the baby & also close to my grandma, she was a 2nd mom to him. He hated breaking the news to her. But Glen was always wonderful to do the right thing and told her after it all was done. He knew grandma struggled financially & didn't want her to try to pay for anything & wanted to complete it to save her money and heartache. Glen was a wonderful man. Strong, sometimes hard. He was the 1st to threaten spanking me if I didn't eat my veggies, he said I only did it cause you were sickly Laura, he never did spank me though. He was a wonderful Great Uncle, a wonderful Uncle, a loving brother, and a dedicated son. And loved his children, all of them, more than they may ever know.
