A veteran of World War II, Grant was a captain in Company C/B, 175th Infantry Regimen, 29th Infantry Division. He enlisted on March 11, 1942. Grant Darby married Ida Mae Zurick (1921 - 1999) on October 17, 1941, in California and they had three daughters: Sheila A. (1948 - 2001), Susan, and Sharon Darby and one son, Grant Darby III.

The parade was 6 miles long and included floats, Macy's employees dressed as clowns, cowboys, and sword-wielding knights, and animals from Central Park Zoo.
