Gunnar Bersos was born on October 4, 1922 in Norway to Inga S Bersos and Hilmar Bersos, and had siblings Margot O. (Bersos) McMasters, Agnes (Bersos) Buyers, and Ivar Bersos. He married Shirley Bersos in Seattle, King County, Washington United States, and they were married until Shirley's death. Gunnar Bersos died at age 97 years old in July 2020 at Port Townsend in Port Townsend, Jefferson County, and was buried at Tahoma National Cemetery Section H Row C Site 59 18600 Se 240th St, in Kent.

In 1922, in the year that Gunnar Bersos was born, the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C. on May 30th. More than 35,000 people attended the dedication including Lincoln's son, Robert Todd Lincoln, and many Union and Confederate veterans - although the audience was segregated. The Memorial took 10 years to complete.

In 1942, by the time he was 20 years old, on November 28th at 10:15p, a nightclub in Boston, the Cocoanut Grove, caught fire. The origins of the fire are unknown but it killed 492 people - the deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history. Hundreds more were injured. The disaster was so shocking that it replaced World War II in the headlines and lead to reforms in safety standards and codes.
