Gus Savas 1899 - 1974

Gus Savas of Manhasset, Nassau County, NY was born on February 22, 1899. Gus was baptized circa February 2000 in Nicosia, Cyprus County Cyprus. He was in a relationship with Barbara (Demetriou) Savas, and had children John Savas, Marie Elaine Tsacalis, and John Savas. Gus Savas died at age 75 years old in November 1974.

    Gus Savas was born to a Greek Orthodox Christian family. He was baptized Greek Orthodox and followed the faith but attended church rarely do to his work schedule.
  • Military Service

    He like his peers his life was great impacted by WW I and WW II. The family story was that his mother sent him to America to avoid being drafted into the Turkish Army during WW I and possibly die as his father had. Also his mother and sister needed financial help and Gus worked hard and sent money home to support them as many immigrants had done. He had a wife and two children during WW II. He was also too old to be drafted.
  • Professional Career

    Gus was trained to be a carpenter. When he migrated to America he was not able to find work in his field. Be became a bartender. He worked at and became Head Bartender at the Nautilus Beach Club until approximately 1940. In 1941 he became a banquet waiter at the Baltimore Hotel in Manhattan NY till 1971.
  • Personal Life & Family

    As a young man in America he loved to work out in the gym. He eventually became a professional wrestler in his spare time. It was also alleged that he was a Bouncer in Clubs in the 1920s and possibly ‘30s. He loved horse racing and occasionally attending the races at Belmont Race Track. He had a passion for the Brooklyn Dodgers and rarely missed listening to a game.

In 1909, by the time he was only 10 years old, the New York Times published the first movie review. It was a report on D.W. Griffith's movie "Pippa Passes" also called "The Song of Conscience", a silent film. The review said that this work was moving away from "lurid material that attracted the wrath of censors and concerned citizens and toward more respectable ends. The movie was the story of a young female factory worker, on her day off, wandering and singing - thus changing the hearts of those around her towards good.
