  • Introduction

I believe this is my Grandfather who I was told by my Mother Rita and Grandmother Phylis , he was killed in Dunkirk 1940. Never could find out much about him as my grandmother remarried several years later and the subject was pretty much taboo because of my grandmothers later husband Penry it was a very sensitive area. I am told he came from Ton y refail which means in English " sound of the Anvil". My uncle Gwyn Austin is his Son and my Auntie Elsie ( Betty) his oldest daughter my mother Rita being the youngest. My Grand mother remarried as I said to Penry Evans who I have always regarded as my grandfather with respect and John and Jane followed . I feel sometimes sad and at the sometime angry that my blood grandfather Gwyn' s memory seemed somehow forgotten. My own father Ben was a Military Police man and he always told me to remember my real blood Grandfather for the sacrifice he made of his own life in WW2. I don't have any photo's of him but would love to have one! My name is Mark Holland ( Grandson) a County Borough Councillor from Abertillery in Gwent , South Wales.
