    Portland Press Herald Friday, December 14, 2012 Hamilton W. Grant, 78 SOUTH PORTLAND -- Hamilton W. Grant, 78, passed away on Dec. 10, 2012, at his home in South Portland. Ham was a humble and thoughtful man who loved his family and friends. Ham was born in Boston, Mass., on March 30, 1934, the son of Lillian Hamilton Grant and Philip Grant. He attended Westbrook High School, Maine Central Institute and the University of Maine Orono, where he played football and met many life long friends. He married Nancy Guiney Grant in 1959, they settled in Windham and raised three daughters. Ham was active in the Air National Guard and started his career in corrections as a probation parole officer in Rockport and eventually became assistant superintendent of Maine Correctional Center in Windham, where he took pride in developing the job skills program for inmates. His colleagues, friends and family agree that Hamilton brought a high standard for integrity and respect to his work and play. He had the gift of knowing the right thing to do in any situation and then did it for the right reasons. Ham had a calm, decisive disposition and passion for physical activity and the outdoors. He enjoyed spending time with family, summers on Sebago Lake sailing and fishing, and winters skiing at Pleasant Mountain. He started jogging years before it became popular. In retirement he and Nancy appreciated daily walks from their winter home in Ormond Beach, Fla. He is survived by his wife Nancy Grant; brother Richard Grant and his wife Sue, sister Martha Grant Plummer; his children, Kristin Grant and partner Catherine Corey, Marcia Grant and partner Jeannine Bourke, Cathleen Ritter and husband Dave; and many nieces and nephews. Hamilton shared his optimistic, appreciative smile through his last day. He and family are thankful for the many medical professionals that cared for him during his last months, Dr. Baum, Dr. Quinn, the heart specialists at Maine Medical Center, as well as the caring team at Springbrook Health Care Center in Westbrook. Thank you to all the health care professionals that made coming home possible. A private graveside service for family and lifelong friends of Hamilton will be held on Dec. 22, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Westbrook at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for close friends of Hamilton and Nancy and 2:30 to 5 p.m. to all others who want to visit with the family at Peter A. McKernan Hospitality Center at SMCC. Donations in Ham's memory can be made to: Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals P.O.
