Hannah Jane Holden 1831 - 1909

Hannah Jane (Hewett) Holden was born on November 6, 1831 in Brunswick County, North Carolina United States to Moses Hewett and Isabella Hewett. She married Thomas B. Holden in 1853, and they were married until Thomas' death circa 1870. She had a child Benjamin Lafayette Holden. Hannah Holden died at age 77 years old on March 15, 1909.

In 1831, in the year that Hannah Jane Holden was born, on August 21st, in the United States, Nat Turner's slave rebellion broke out in Southampton County, Virginia. Rebel slaves, led by Nat Turner, killed from 55 to 65 people - the largest and deadliest slave uprising in U.S. history. The rebellion was suppressed after a few days and Virginia executed 56 slaves accused of being part of the rebellion although many were innocent. Nat Turner was captured on October 30th, tried, and hung on November 11th.

In 1848, at the age of 17 years old, Hannah was alive when on February 2nd, the Mexican–American War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The Rio Grande River became the border for Texas and California and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming became US territory. Ninety percent of the population in those areas chose to become US citizens.
