In 1821, on July 10th, the United States took possession of the recently acquired territory of Florida from Spain. Spain could no longer afford to support the area so, through a treaty, the US received East and West Florida. Future President Andrew Jackson briefly served as governor of the territory.

In 1859, on October 16th, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. He wanted to "liberate" the guns in the armory and arm slaves. Brown was captured and hanged on December 2nd.
