  • Introduction

Parents were Herman Bracy/Rosalie Reed BIRTH JOKE My grandfather used to tell us grandkids that his parents found him in a basket tied to a Maypole. (In his time dancing around a Maypole on May 1st was a tradition)Since his birthday was May 1st, he figured this was an appropriate story for us. We would sit there wide-eyed and listen to this, then he would just laugh. This was one of his favorite jokes. THE CABIN At the age of 68 Harold Bracy cut down trees on his daughter's (Althea) land and built a log cabin. He would walk for what seemed miles and cut down a tree, then would put one end over his shoulder and drag it back to the cabin site. The trees were heavy and he dragged them one by one. What a strong man for a 68 year old. The cabin had a fireplace made of stones, a loft on top of the cabin, and two bedrooms. Lighting was obtained by oil lanterns and candles. There was no bathroom inside, only an outhouse down the path. At night, since there were plenty of wild animals around, we would use a covered bean pot kept under the beds, which we would dispose of in the morning by taking it downhill from the cabin and burying it. Water was obtained by rain in a barrel and by bucket from a well he dug. He loved to garden (vegetables & flowers). He would make bird calls and listen to them answer back. We had some nice summers at our grandparents cabin, my cousins, sister, and I). We all took turns spending time there. Our evenings were spent by playing checkers, dominoes, and cards. The cabin gave us grandchildren time with our grandparents (listening to their stories and learning about how things used to be) and also provided some much needed time for our parents to have a little time alone. When we wanted to take a good shower or bath, we would walk the 1/2 mile down the road from the cabin to our Uncle Bill & Aunt Althea's house. I can't remember how much land they owned (most of it out in the woods of Maine) but it seemed to go for miles. You could get lost in those woods, and sometimes we did. Gloryann Bracy Avakian
