He attended school in Willard and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, (C.C.C.), a public works program that employed young adults during the Great Depression of the 30's and 40's.

He served with honor in the U.S. Army from March 21, 1941, to October 27, 1945, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant and specializing as a Message Center Chief. His exemplary service earned him accolades including the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars.

    Harold retired as an Office Appliance Repairer from the General Services Administration in Washington, DC. He worked at the Office Machine Repair Shop at the Washington Navy Yard. However Hammock's retirement was brief as he resumed full-time employment at the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) until December 2003.

    He was married twice. Harold was married to Juanita Elizabeth Carter (1937-2000). The couple did not have any children together. Harold also married Eula Mae Thompson (1925-1994) and together they had children including a son named Leslie Allen Hammock (1947-2019).

    After a full life of 90 years, HAROLD W. HAMMOCK, born in Mount Vernon, Indiana on January 29, 1917, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2007 at the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington in Washington, DC. A resident of Willard OH during his early youth, Mr. Hammock attended school in Willard and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, (C.C.C.), a public works program that employed young adults during the Great Depression of the 30's and 40's. He Honorably served with the U.S. Army from March 21, 1941 to October 27, 1945, and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant, with a Military Occupational Specialty of Message Center Chief. He received the Good Conduct Medal; American Defense Service Medal; and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars. Mr. Hammock retired from the General Services Administration in Washington, DC as an Office Appliance Repairer in the Office Machine Repair Shop at the Washington Navy Yard; however, his retirement was short lived. He returned to work at the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) full time until December 2003. Known as "Ham" to many of his friends, Mr. Hammock was known for his "call sign" "N3DTZ" and was an active member of the C-Car Ham Radio Club of Washington. Mr. Hammock was born to the late Charlie Harrison Hammock and Mollie Mae (Payne) Hammock, and was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Mae (Thompson) Hammock of Willard, OH on April 2, 1994 and Juanita E. Carter-Hammock of Washington, DC on December 13, 2000. He leaves behind a dear friend and companion of many years, Mrs. Yvonne Parsons of Washington, DC. Mr. Hammock is survived by children Leslie Hammock (Lisa) of Willard, OH; Jacquelyn Smith (Leevangela) of Temple Hills, MD; Cynthia K. Hammock-Ellis, Sr. (Bill) of San Diego, CA; Gary Hammock (Sharon) of Las Vegas, NV; Karen Mills and Michael Hammock (Rita) of Willard, OH; Mark (Sandy) Hammock of Mansfield, OH; step daughters Celestina Midgett of District Heights, MD; Jacci Carter of Washington, DC; and stepsons Noll Carter, Jr., and John Carter, of Washington, DC and Maryland; 28 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and 7 great-great grandchildren; siblings Lillian (Hammock) Camak of Columbus, OH; Dorothy (Hammock) Carmichael of Mansfield, OH; and the late Harrison Hammock; Helen (Hammock) Matthews of West Middlesex, PA; Alice (Hammock) Thompson of Willard, OH; Rose E. (Hammock) Cheeks of Columbus, OH; Pauline (Hammock) Bond of Mansfield, OH; Ivan Hammock of Dayton, Ohio and William Arthur Hammock of Mansfield, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 16, 2007 at Noon at the Secor Funeral Home in Willard, Ohio with Elder Canty Gaddy officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at Noon. Internment follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Willard, OH. From www.secorfuneralhome.com
