Harry John Cummins of Camperdown Australia was born in 1907 in Camperdown to Clara Louisa (Fenton) Cummins and Hugh Cummins. He had siblings Clara Margaret Cummins and Edith Louisa Cummins. He married Enid Lilian (Renshaw) Cummins, and had children Rosemary Cummins Notini and David Harry Cummins. Harry Cummins died at age 93 years old in 2000.

In 1907, in the year that Harry John Cummins was born, the Monongah coal mining disaster occurred on December 6th, happening at the Fairmont Coal Company’s No. 6 and No. 8 mines.. Over 361 miners were killed. Because there was no breathing apparatus at the time to help rescuers, recovery efforts were greatly hampered. It is considered the worst mining disaster in American history and led to government oversight in mining practices.

In 1911, Harry was just 4 years old when the first Indianapolis 500 was run in May. Ray Harroun was the winner - he was an engineer and had retired from racing but he came back for this race. After the race, he retired for good. The purse was $27,550 - the largest offered up to that time - and Harroun received $10,000 for first place. His average time was 74.602 mph.
