Introduction

He was said to have been one of twin boys, given by their birth parents (had multiple births of multiples) because they couldn't care for more children, to neighbors (who had no children). Their birth name was Potts, and Harry's adopted name was Kroen. (His brother, given name unknown, chose to keep the name of Potts.) What I remember beyond this is that the families were neighbors in a "kind of German community" here in the US. Harry was born in West Virginia, but grew up in Pennsylvania, as best as I can follow. I am hoping to connect with the Potts family, because they are important people, regardless of the break in the family ties of all those years ago.

In 1922, in the year that Harry Robert Kroen Sr was born, on June 22, coal miners in Herrin Illinois, were on strike (coal miners had been on strike nationally since April 1). The striking miners were outraged at the strikebreakers (scabs) that the company had brought in and laid siege to the mine. Three union workers were killed when gunfire was exchanged. The next day, union miners killed 23 strikebreakers and mine guards. No one, on either side, ever faced jail time.
