Hartley Graham Holwell of Fitzroy, City of Yarra County, VIC Australia was born in 1896 in Warrnambool to Margaret Graham (Pollock) Holwell and William John Holwell. He had siblings Dorothy Violet Holwell, Elizabeth Selina Holwell, Stewart Seddon Holwell, Gordon Louis Holwell, Hercules Robert Holwell, and William Ewart Holwell. Hartley Holwell married Gladys Pauline Blanks in 1941, and died at age 65 years old in March 1962 in Fitzroy.

In 1896, in the year that Hartley Graham Holwell was born, in April, the first study on global warming due to CO2 - carbon dioxide - in the atmosphere was published by Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius. Arrhenius concluded that human activity due to the Industrial Revolution would amplify CO2 in the atmosphere, causing a greenhouse effect. His conclusions have been extensively tested in the ensuing 100+ years and are still seen to hold true.
