My neighbor Harvey
Harvey was my neighbor in Spartanburg, South Carolina. His one bedroom apartment functioned as a clubhouse. It seems every night people would drop into Harvey’s place and greet Harvey with the name “Doctor”, a nickname from his job as an engineer at Milliken, the large textile firm headquartered in Spartanburg. Harvey would often respond by saying “pour one”. Although the doctor had drunk his share, he never seemed drunk. On weekends Harvey typically towed his boat with his Cadillac to one of the lakes. i recall joining him on a trip to Lake Lure.
His hospitality towards me and to others i appreciated. And now writing over forty years later, i can update my feelings to cherished. He was one of a kind. I will pour one now in his honor.
