Haskew Bates Leacraft was born on October 12, 1923 in Onslow, North Carolina to parents Benjamin Leacraft (1883-1927) and Delia Jones (1888-1924). He had a sister named Jessie Leacraft (1906-1925). He grew up in Onslow and later moved to Meherrin, Virginia, USA. He registered for the draft on June 30, 1942, in Meherrin, Virginia, when he was 19 years old. He was the head of his household and was employed by Travis Higgins at the time. Haskew later enlisted in the military on February 23, 1943, in Richmond, Virginia. He was assigned to the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers and served as a Private in the Selectees (enlisted men) unit. On March 28, 1948 he married Mattie Oree/Irene Cyrus (1921–2016) in Washington DC. The couple had three sons together including Alfred Rudolph Cyrus (1944-2005). The couple moved to District Heights, MD in the 1990's and lived there until Haskew's passing on April 8, 2011.

He later moved to Meherrin, Virginia, USA in the 1940's and then got married in Washington DC in 1948 and lived there with his wife through the 1990's. They then moved to District Heights, MD in the 1990's and he passed away there in 2011.
