    Hayim Nahman Bialik was a famous Jewish poet who wrote in Hebrew and became known as Israel's National Poet. He published about 20 Yiddish poems in different Yiddish periodicals and was one of the most influential contributors to the revival of the Hebrew language. He was born and raised in Russia, moved to Germany, and then (in 1924) moved to Tel Aviv. On his 60th birthday (in 1933), nationwide celebrations were held for him. The next year, he died in Vienna, Austria, following an operation and was buried in Tel Aviv.

    Hayim Nahman Bialik was born in Ivnytsia, Volhynian Governorate in the Russian Empire to parents Itzik-Yosef Bialik, and Dinah-Priveh. His father was a scholar and businessman from Zhytomyr. He had an older brother Sheftel (born 1862) and two sisters Chenya-Ides (born 1871) and Blyuma (born 1875). When Bialik was 8 years old, his father died and his mother took him to Zhytomyr to live with his Orthodox grandfather, Yankl-Moishe Bialik.

    He received a traditional Jewish religious education, but also explored European literature. At 15 years old, he attended school in Lithuania to study at a famous Talmudic academy under Rabbi Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin. There he was able to continue his Jewish schooling while also expand his education of European literature as well. Attracted to the Jewish Enlightenment movement, Haskala, Bialik gradually drifted away from yeshiva life.

    Hayim Nahman Bialik was a famous Jewish poet who wrote in Hebrew and became known as Israel's National Poet. From 1899–1915, Bialik published about 20 Yiddish poems in different Yiddish periodicals in the Russian Empire. These poems are now known as and considered to be among the best of modern Yiddish poetry from that period. Bialik wrote several different styles of poetry and is known most famously for his long, nationalistic poems, which call for a reawakening of the Jewish people. By writing his poems in Hebrew, Bialik was one of the most influential contributors to the revival of the Hebrew language. His influence is felt deeply in all modern Hebrew literature.
