Helen Francis Donovan-Mainardy
When she was seeing my future grandfather ( Francis Mainardy) when she found out that he didn’t come from money, she left him, She briefly dated gangster Dutch Shultz, but after 5 years she returned to him and had my father, (Francis jr.) at age 40. She then had her second son at age 43. Quite uncommon then.
My father told me she bore a striking resemblance to 1930’s actress Mary Astor, and people would ask her for autographs, (which she happily signed). When her breast cancer was becoming advanced, my father told me that when she was going to go to the hospital, she put on a big wide brimmed hat and she tipped it to everyone in the room, smiled, and said “Well.. it was nice knowing you.” She had a great sense of humor and my father saw a lot of her in me.
