    Helen Jane (Logan) Walsh was born to Charles Logan and Eliza J. "Jennie" Lee in Stephenson County, Illinois. She had siblings Joseph and Agnes Logan. Helen Logan married John F. Walsh (1904 - 1969) on September 23, 1936 in Evanston, Illinois. They had sons, John L. "Jack" Walsh, James R. "Jim" Walsh, and daughters Jane E. and Jo Ellen Walsh. Retired when she died at the age of 99, Helen was employed as a teacher, teaching in the rural schools of Prairie Block, Rock City, White Swan, and Winnebago for 11 years and at Durand Elementary for 15 years, retiring in 1972.     Helen attended Davis High School in Davis, Illinois. The origins of the school system in Davis can be traced back to 1863. It operated as a 1-12 school until 1921 when the school district was declared illegal by the Circuit Court. It then operated as a three-year high school until it was deactivated in 1949. High school students were then sent to nearby Dakota High School to the southwest. In 1965, all school functions were ceased. She graduated from Rock City Grade School, Davis High School, Illinois State Normal University, and Pestalozzi-Froebel Teacher's College.

    Helen married John F. Walsh (1904 - 1969) on September 23, 1936 in Evanston, Illinois. They had sons, John L. "Jack" Walsh, James R. "Jim" Walsh and daughters Jane E. and Jo Ellen Walsh. When she died, she had eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Active in her community, Helen was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Durand; the National Education Association: the Illinois Education Association: the Winn-Boone Retired Teacher's Association, Durand; the Woman's Club; the St. Anne's CCW; and the Otter Creek Historical Society.     The following obituary appeared in the Rockford Register on Thursday, January 5, 2006: Helen J. Walsh, 99 DURAND - Helen J. Walsh, 99, of Durand died at 2:29 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, in Medina Manor Nursing Center. Born Dec. 22, 1906, in Rock Run Township near Rock City, the daughter of Charles and Jennie (Lee) Logan. Married John F. Walsh in Evanston Sept. 23, 1936. She was employed as a teacher, teaching in the rural schools of Prairie Block, Rock City, White Swan and Winnebago for 11 years and Durand Elementary for 15 years, retiring in 1972. Member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Durand, National Education Association, Illinois Education Association, Winn-Boone Retired Teacher's Association, Durand Woman's Club, St. Anne's CCW and Otter Creek Historical Society. She was past president of Durand School Board. Helen loved her family, cards, reading, crossword puzzles and socializing. Graduated from Rock City Grade School, Davis High School, Illinois State Normal University and Pestalozzi-Froebel Teacher's College. Survivors include son John L. "Jack" Walsh, Davis; daughter, Jane E. (Steve) Dickerson, Atlanta, Ga.; son, James R. "Jim" (Cheryl) Walsh, Davis; daughter, Jo Ellen (Marlan) Sharer, Gen-esco; grandchildren, Mary T. (Doug) Fehr, Michael T. (Mary Jo) Walsh, Lisa (Gordon Anderson) Dickerson, Heidi (Dan) Aehl, Michelle Walsh, Laurie Walsh, Matthew (Jennifer) Sharer and Melissa (Norman Sheehan) Sharer; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; brother, Joseph Logan; sister, Agnes Gill; and daughter-in-law, Nancy Walsh. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, in St. Mary Catholic Church, Durand, with Father Jerome Walsh officiating and Monsignor Eric Barr co-celebrating. Burial in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Durand. McCorkle Funeral Home, 101 Main St. Durand, assisted the family. Friends may call at St. Mary Catholic Church, Durand, from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan 6, where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial is to be established.
