    HENRIETTA DOMNITCH OBITUARY DOMNITCH--Henrietta, passed away suddenly on April 16, 2009. She was the cherished wife of Irving Domnitch for 62 years; mother to Marilyn Metz and Karen Domnitch; grandmother of Justin Metz, Devon Metz, Jonathan Marmon, and Eryn Marmon Dolan; and great-grandmother to Luc Ryder Metz. She lived her life with strength, courage and humor, surrounded by her family and friends. Her kindness, generosity, and spirit will be profoundly missed. The family requests donations be sent to Lenox Hill Hospital or the charity of your choice. Published by New York Times on Apr. 19, 2009.

In 1919, in the year that Henrietta Domnitch was born, Indian lawyer Mahatma Gandhi initiated the Satyagraha campaigns, beginning the nonviolent resistance movement against British rule of India. Satyagraha means "holding onto truth" and the campaign for India independence, which was eventually obtained, called for "self-suffering" rather than inflicting suffering (i.e., violence) on others.

In 1920, at the age of merely 1 year old, Henrietta was alive when the Volstead Act became law. Formally called the National Prohibition Act, the Volstead Act enabled law enforcement agencies to carry out the 18th Amendment. It said that "no person shall manufacture, sell, barter, transport, import, export, deliver, or furnish any intoxicating liquor except as authorized by this act" and defined intoxicating liquor as any beverage containing more than 0.5% alcohol by volume.
