He married Ethel Frances (Connor) McLean, and had a child Joan (McLean) Cossor. Henry McLean died at age 94 years old on March 21, 1994, and was buried at Wodonga Cemetery 190 Sangsters Rd, in Wodonga, Wodonga City County.

This penny was also the first U.S. cent to include the words "In God We Trust.".
