CASTLETON. - On the 19th February, at Bethesda Hospital, Richmond, Henry, the dearly beloved husband of Mary Ann Castleton, of 84 Ramsden street, Clifton Hill, loved father of Will, Jim, Les, Agnes, and the late Robert, brother of Mrs. R. O'Brien ( Echuca ), Mrs. G. O'Flynn (Carlton), Mr. W. T. Castleton ( North Melbourne ), and the late Mary Ann Willman, Fanny Davey, Sarah Jane Willman, and George Castleton. Aged 61 years. Late of Echuca, and formerly of Huntly. - Gone, but not forgotten.

In 1861, in the year that Henry Castleton was born, on August 5th, in order to help pay for the Civil War, the Federal government instituted the first income tax in the United States. The Revenue Act of 1861 was rescinded in 1862 but from 1861 through 1862, a flat tax was charged - 3% - on all income over $800, which included only 3% of households. In 1862, a broader tax was enacted.

In 1888, he was 27 years old when Irishman John Robert Gregg published a pamphlet in the U.S., teaching his first version of shorthand - Gregg shorthand. When he improved on the first version and published it 5 years later, Gregg shorthand became popular.
