In 1832, in the year that Henry Edward Grey was born, by February 12th, a cholera epidemic in London claimed at least 3,000 lives - it eventually killed 6,536. The epidemic spread to France and North America later in the year. Cholera is spread through contaminated food and water but at the time, it was thought to be spread by a "miasma” - a bad smell - in the air.

In 1861, at the age of 29 years old, Henry was alive when on August 5th, in order to help pay for the Civil War, the Federal government instituted the first income tax in the United States. The Revenue Act of 1861 was rescinded in 1862 but from 1861 through 1862, a flat tax was charged - 3% - on all income over $800, which included only 3% of households. In 1862, a broader tax was enacted.
