Introduction

Henry Farnham was of Rochester, Kent, England. His parents' names are not known.[1] Circa 1600 he married Mary, whose last name at birth is not known. They had two children, Ralph and Ede(e) (probably Edith). Henry was a mariner. His last voyage was on the trading ship Moone, owned by the East India Company. Russell Farnham states that navigation logs by "Richard Bragge m mate of the Moone his journal from Cape toward Bantam November the 5th, 1618" reviewed in 1992 at the British Library (India Office Library and Records, L/MAR/A/XXVI T, India) indicate that the ship made a successful easterly voyage around the treacherous Cape of Good Hope.[1] He made his last Will and Testament on December 23, 1618, either in Bantam, Java, or on the return voyage to England, describing himself in the will as "sicke ... in bodie, but of perfecte memory." He died some time after that date and 18 Feb 1619/20, when the will was proved by his widow, Mary.[1] Heirs named in the will were his wife Mary, son Ralph, and daughter Edee, both of whom were still minors (meaning Ralph was under 20 and Edee was under 18).[2] Will The probate indexes for the Archdeaconry of Rochester and the Prerogative Court of Canterbury [PCC] reveal only one relevant Farnham probate, the one for Henry Farnham, which Frank Farnham had already found. A full transcript follows:- In the name of god, Amen, I Henrie ffarnham one of the Moones Companie beinge sicke at this pnte in bodie but of perfecte memorie, to god I give thanckes doe make this my last will and testamente bequeathinge my soule to god my maker hopinge of the forgivnes of my synnes in and through Jesus Christe my Saviour and my bodie I bequeath to such Christian buriall as shalbe appointed for yt And for my worldles goodes I bequeath in manner as followinge vizt Imprimis my debtes beinge first paide I give unto my sonne Raph ffarnham and my daughter Edee ffarnham one house and tenement lyinge in Leede in the Countie of Kente to be devided equallie betwixte them the boy to possesse his parte at the age of twentie yeares The girle at the age of eighteene; my wages I bequeath to my lovinge wife Marie ffarneham and for the cloathes and other thinges which I have in the shipp I give to John Carron and Richard Smith, two of this shippes companie to be equallie devided betwixt them Item for the twentie shillinges which is in Roberte Coles keepeinge I give five shillinges of it to Josua Bainbrigge Item five shillinge to John Evanns Boatswaines mate five shillinges to William Perkines and the other five shillinges I give to the above said Roberte Cole Item I give to John Carron my Trumpett makeinge my true espoused lovinge wife Mary ffarnham my sole Executrix of this my Last will and testamente for witnes whereof I have hereto sett my hand this three and twentith daie of December one thousand six hundred and eighteene.
