Henry Repphun is the son of Peter Repphun (1873-1952) and Regina Catherine Ruppel (1874-1952). He was born on November 19, 1910 in Schoensee, Molotschna, Russia and grew up in a large family with siblings Hannah, Emily, Jake, Louise, Regina, Maria, Lena, Peter, Sophia, Gustina, and Sarah Sally Repphun. He and his family immigrated to the states around 1912 and resided in Gratiot, Michigan, USA. He lived in Newark and Fulton, Gratiot, Michigan, USA. On February 17, 1941 Henry married Marion Scott (1910–1993) in Angola, Steuben, Indiana, USA and the couple resided in East Lansing, Michigan, USA. A few years after getting married, Henry enlisted in the United States Army on May 14, 1943, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was a Private Selectee and had no branch assignment at the time of his enlistment. During his time in the Army, Henry was promoted to the rank of Private First Class (Pfc).

He was white of Russian roots as he and his family was born in Russia and immigrated to the Untied States. His father Peter was born on November 1, 1873 in Baretose, Orenberg, Russia and his mother Regina was born in Rainwald, Saratowka on the Volga River, Russia on January 27, 1874.

Henry Repphun enlisted in the United States Army on May 14, 1943, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was a Private Selectee and had no branch assignment at the time of his enlistment. His military serial number was 36464902. Henry enlisted under the terms of "Enlistment for the duration of the war or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law." This meant that he was committed to serving in the Army until the end of World War II or until the President deemed his service no longer necessary. During his time in the Army, Henry was promoted to the rank of Private First Class (Pfc). World War II was a global conflict that lasted from 1939 to 1945. The United States Army played a significant role in the war, fighting on multiple fronts and participating in many campaigns.
