I met Hank Schapp in 1964, when we both taught at White Pass High School in Randle, WA. He taught Sciences: Biology, Physics, Chemistry. I taught Spanish, French and English. The school district ran out of money due to federal funds being reallocated and and the local people not wanting to pay more in taxes. Henry tried to actually teach sciences in a place where chain saw repair was often the main part of the curriculum. Henry's family was from the Frisian Islands, in Germany, served in the Afrika Corps, and was captured at Casserine Pass on Tunisia. He was a POW in Alabama, then did was forced to work for a French farmer. In the 1950's, he came the the US and worked for an uncle who had a bakery in San Francisco.
He bought a lot near SeaTac Airport, and moved a house onto it. Then sold it when the airport was enlarged. The last place I saw him was in a house near Matlock, WA. We corresponded for some time until around 1980. He was an interesting and intelligent guy.
