On July 16, 1857 he married Christiana Matilda Huddleston (1823–1861) in Gawler, South Australia, Australia. They had a daughter together, Constance Mary Elizabeth Thirkell (1859-1873). After Christiana's death, Henry re-married to Ruth Hickmer (1836–1924) on January 3, 1867 at St John's Church, Adelaide, SA, Australia.
