    Herbert Baltuch was born on March 10, 1917 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York to parents Max Baltuch (1889-1947) and Rae"Rachel" Michalovitz (born 1893). He had a sister, Clarice Baltuch (1922-2007) and they grew up in the Bronx. Herbert registered for the World War II draft at age 23 on October 16, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York and ended up serving two years later. He served in the US Army from April 7, 1942 until May 2, 1946. On November 1, 1948 he married Marilyn Selma Kalen Rampino (1926-2006) in New York City, New York. They had a son together. The couple divorced in the early 1970's.

Since Mata Hari, born Margaretha Geertruida "Margreet" MacLeod, was a citizen of the Netherlands (which remained neutral in World War 1), she could travel freely in Europe. Her travels (and her romantic entanglements) raised suspicion and she was arrested by the French and found guilty. There is still controversy about her guilt although her name has become synonymous with a seductive female spy.
