Herbert was Jewish. He was Bar. mitzvahed at Beth Shalom Congregation in Washington, DC.

Herbert was a Podiatrist. He was very active in the political world of Podiatry on the local and national level. He was on the national board and ultimately was the national president from 1980-1981. He was the founder, 1st President and Board Chairman of the Podiatry Insurance Company of America PICA.

Was member of Juvenile Diabetic Research. Helped with major fund raising.
