  • Introduction

    Herbert was my grandfather. My father was career military. He always made sure we saw alot of Lala and Pap. I don't know much about how Pap grew up. I remember him as kind and gentle and he loved his guitar and beer. We listened to him without fail. He never yelled or raised his voice to my brother and sister and cousins. He had two daughters. Alice and Yvonne. He didn't like the name Yvonne so he called my mother Sally. He had 5 grandchildren and at the time of his death, one great grandchild.

In 1903, in the year that Herbert Vitatoe was born, the book The Souls of Black Folk, written by W. E. B. Du Bois, was published. Containing several essays on the African-American experience in America, much of the book was based on Du Bois' own life. The book was one of the very early works in the science of sociology.

In 1910, at the age of just 7 years old, Herbert was alive when Halley's comet, which returns past the earth every 75 - 76 years was observed photographically for the first time. Two fortuitous events occurred - photography had been invented since the last time the comet had passed and the comet was relatively close. There was panic because one astronomer claimed that the gas from its tail "would impregnate the atmosphere and possibly snuff out all life on the planet." People bought gas masks, "anti-comet pills" and "anti-comet umbrellas".
