What I remember about Herb and Vera, as I knew of them, is limited. I grew up across the street, and I remember my mother told me that when I was born, Vera brought over a little outfit for me. I remember Herb spoke with a fairly heavy accent, and was always nice to me. When I was in high school, they had a garage sale, and I bought a few little things, but remember the faded tatoo on his forearm; a number. My parents had told me that they had been prisoners in WW2, but beyond that I knew virtually nothing. As a young adult I was always curious about their story, but it didn't often seem appropriate to bring up such subjects, especially to the people who endured them. In retrospect, I think it's important that their story not fade, and that the remembrance of the hardships and struggles endured by so many should be a priority. I wish now that I would have talked to them more, and hope that someone who knew them better than I will be willing to share.
