Herbert Walter Roy Dodgson of Glen Waverley, City of Monash County, VIC Australia was born in 1891 in Williamstown, City of Hobsons Bay County to John Dodgson and Sarah Young Dodgson. He had siblings Ethel Dodgson, Caroline Victoria May (Dodgson) Swale, Charles Norman "Bill" Dodgson, Emily Elizabeth Winifred Dodgson, John Edgar Dodgson, and Dorothy Hart Dodgson. Herbert Dodgson married Winifred Flora Farrer in 1922, and died at age 87 years old in 1978 in Glen Waverley, City of Monash County.

In 1914, Herbert was 23 years old when in August, the Panama Canal opened to traffic. Begun by the French in the 1880's and abandoned, the United States undertook further construction in 1904. After 10 years, and the elimination of malaria carrying mosquitoes (which caused immense delays for the French and the Americans), the 48 mile long artificial waterway - a series of locks - created a shortcut for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
