Nicholas Hermann Deitrich Simon Marquard of Victoria Australia was born on August 13, 1817 in Gluckstadt,, Holstein. County belonged to Denmark then but now Germany to Johann Marquard and Margaretha Schroder Marquard and Johann Marquard. He married Margaretha Elise (Pauline) Wagner on September 29, 1852, and they were married until Nicholas' death on February 2, 1879. Nicholas Marquard had children Johannes Max Hermann Marquard, Oscar Wilhelm Richard Marquard, Emma Anna (Elise) Marquard, Ernst Joseph Reimer Detlef Marquard, and Elise Henrietta Helene (Catharina) Marquard.

    Moved before marriage to Hanover, then married and moved with wife to Hamburg, Germany. Had first two children Johannes and Oscar here. With war with Denmark looming they migrated to Melbourne late 1857 or early 1858. Travelled separately, Hermann arriving first who went up to start mining gold in Bendigo. After five years the gold was running out so he turned to teaching German at the local Lutheran school in Sandhurst, an area of Bendigo. Became passionate about raising money for a new Government school in Bendigo, with all the latest facilities. Board of Education agreed and foundation stone for Common School No. 877, Violet Street was laid in February 1866. School opened with enrolment of 210 children in January l867. It even had a fully equiped gymnasium.

I am a direct decendant and great granddaughter of (Nicholas) Herman Marquard. Born in Gluckstadt, Holstein on 13/8/1817 migrated to Bendigo, Victoria, Australia with wife (Margaretha) Elise, born 9/8/l826, died 1901. First a miner then a teacher, had five children, Johannes, Oscar, Emma, Elise and Ernst. He, Johannes and Oscar died of T.B. and Emma died in a house fire, all in Bendigo. Ernst came down to Melbourne with his sister Elise, married Jane Mary Murdoch in 2/6/1897, and they resided in Camberwell, Victoria. They had three children, including my father. Dorothy, Jean and Reginald. Reginald married Audrey Grace Boyd in 1937 and had two children, Lois and Wade. Reginald died 24/5/1974. Lois married (Norman) Peter Trace and Wade married Kate Grigg. Wade and Kate had two children, Sam and Emma at Williamstown, Victoria, Lois and Peter had four sons, Andrew, David, Anthony and Michael. Wade Marquard died 2018, Peter Trace died 2010.
