Introduction

Hertha was born Hertha Tode. She immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1912 with her large family. She then worked picking cotton and doing other farm labor in the midwest and south, before moving to California where she met John Schrieve (formerly Johannes Schriever). They married, founded a chicken farm, and had three children: Fred, Robert and Carl. All three served in the Armed Forces. Hertha lived to see her first great-grandchild born in 1996 before her death in 1997.
