  • Introduction

    HM King Francis Osamade Allagoa Mingi X was the Amayanabo King of the Ancient Kingdom of Nembe, and the founder of the Allagoa dynasty, Nembe,is a city-state in the estuaries of the Niger Delta,Nigeria, that traded and was recognised by the British Empire as evidenced by treaties,the violation of these agreements by the British,led to the Nembe-Bristish war of 1895. There are vast reserves of Oil and Gas in the kingdom,one of the largest in Africa,the people of Nembe are known for the introduction and spread of nominal christianity, (one of the first tribes in Nigeria to have the bible and dictionaries in their language) western education in the niger Delta due to their early contact with Europeans as well as matrilineal and patrilineal inheritance and women rights. His majesty is a descendant of Mingi,the great King,via Kingboy Amain,King of Nembe,whose daughter Princess Yeh married Chief Elemah and begat his father, Chief joseph Allagoa. His mother,was Omu Okwei ,Queen of Osomari,Onitsha,Nigeria, and she is descended from the royal line of the Kings of Osomari. He was born in the late 1880s baptized into the Catholic Church and christened Francis at birth, received an extensive British education and worked as a court Registrar of the Supreme Court and eventually retired as a magistrate. Crowned by the Bishop of Owerri,Present at his coronation ceremony where Mgr. Whelan, Bishop of Owerri and the Rivers province of the Roman Catholic Church, assisted by Fr. G.B. Healy, Fr. J. Tobin, Fr. W. Mckenna and Fr. O’mahony. The state was represented by Mr. J.G. Allan, Senior resident of Rivers Province, Mr. G.L. Barrow, District Officer of Brass and a host of other chiefs who came to pay allegiance. History records that the king’s coat of arms was the sign of the Holy Ghost in the form of a dove hovering over the royal crown,a symbol also beautifully carved on his throne. His coronation gown was white and the Royal jewels included a gold crown,a sceptre, and an orb. He loved education and pushed for the establishment of the Nembe National Grammar School (NNGS) in Ogbolomabiri. He was a states man, an encourager who left memorable legacies. He also contributed his quota politically when he supported the Rivers State Congress in the early 1950’s and served as chairman of the Rivers Chiefs and Peoples Conference formed in 1956, together with the young vibrant Harold Dappa-Biriye as principal secretarynd which led eventually to the creation of Rivers State. He played key roles in the resolution that granted Self Government to Eastern Nigeria in 1957. The MINGI stool was accorded first class status in 1958, along side Bonny, Opobo, Kalabari, Calabar, Onitsha, Oguta and Arochukwu. MING X was loved by his people, and given the title,"The Happy King" was cherished for his humility, deep compassion and benevolence. He reached out for cordial ties with distant kingdoms and was recognized by the Queen of England. He died in 1967 and was interred in the Royal cemetry in a Mausoleum. His reign was marked by unbroken peace and prosperity. Ambrose Ezeolisa Allagoa,CON, who was a Pioneer Chief Judge in Old Rivers State, was later crowned Mingi XI after the demise of his father,his cousin, professor Emeritus E.J Allagoa,has preserved the rich history of the peoples and languages of the Niger Delta. His children and grandchildren,cousins,nephews and nieces and extended family are found in virtually all sectors of the Nigerian government,education,law and healthcare and the private sector as well as in the United Sates and especially the UK and make up the Alagoa family.
