  • Introduction

From the war records Holger was 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed 10 stone 13 pounds. He was a fair complexion and had grey eyes. His hair was straw colour, but would have been snow white when young like all of his siblings. He came from a family consisting of 14 children and his parents were Johan Frederik Wilhelm Olsen and Hedevig Eleonore Johanne Morck who arrived in New Zealand from Copenhagen in February 1833. Johan was a seaman and he worked his passage and came on the 'Mataura' while Hedevig travelled out with friends on another ship and paid her fare both arriving a day apart in Auckland. His father in the early days worked as a gum diigger and they lived in a temporary nikau whare. They were very poor and Hedevig would listen for cow bells then catch a cow and milk it to fed her babies. Meanwhile, Hoger's father built their first house at Mareretu where Holger was later born. The land was a 1000 acres block one of the allotments granted from the Government at that time. When Hoger's father was about 60 he yearned for the sea once again and was able to buy 500 acres of land at Hukatere overlooking the Kaipara Harbour. First of all the family lived in a woolshed while his father built their new home. Holger use to work on the farm with his father and brothers including Henry who at the aged 25, in 1912 tried to rescue a drifting dinghy at Hukatere, but not being a strong swimmer was drowned in the process. At the outbreak of war Holger and his brother Herbert enlisted for overseas service. Sadly Holger didn't come back. Herbert brought back an English war bride, built a home nearby and carried on with the farm.
