He married Sarah Driscoll Hockey, and had children Bertha May Hockey, William Horace Hockey, Horace William Hockey, Alfred Henry Hockey, Alice Maude Hockey, Emma Elizabeth Hockey, Gertrude (Hockey) Jenkins, and Alfred Henry Hockey. Horace Hockey died at age 86 years old on August 10, 1943 in East Brunswick, Victoria, and was buried at Melbourne General Cemetery College Cres, in Parkville, City of Melbourne County, VIC.

Dawson, 156 Blyth-street, East Brunswick, Horace, the dearly beloved husband of Sarah Hockey, and loved fathe of Bertha ( Mrs. W. McKimmie ), Alice ( Mrs. Dawson ), Emma ( Mrs. F. Fontaine ), Gertrude ( Mrs. Jenkins ) and the late William and Alfred. Aged 86 years.

In 1888, at the age of 32 years old, Horace was alive when on July 25th, a court stenographer from Salt Lake City - Frank Edward McGurrin - decisively beat the competition in a typing contest in Ohio. He was supposedly the only person who used touch typing and is believed to have invented the method. Touch typing is ubiquitous now - but Frank's win is what convinced everyone that the method was good!
