Hugh David Moodie of Hamilton, Southern Grampians Shire County, VIC Australia was born on July 27, 1918 in Hamilton to Mabel Georgina Beggs and John Richard Moodie. He had siblings John Claude Beggs Moodie, Annie Lavinia Moodie, Marcus William Moodie, and Dorothy Enid Moodie. Hugh Moodie married Helena Mary Whiting in 1941, and died at age 76 years old in 1994 in Hamilton.

In 1918, in the year that Hugh David Moodie was born, in January, President Wilson presented his Fourteen Points, which assured citizens that World War I was being fought for a moral cause and outlined a plan for postwar peace in Europe. The only leader of the Allies to present such a plan, the Europeans thought Wilson was being too idealistic. The points included free trade, open agreements, democracy and self-determination. They were based on the research and suggestions of 150 advisors.

In 1947, he was 29 years old when on April 15th, Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, playing first base. He was the first black man to play in the Major Leagues. Since the 1880's, professional baseball had been segregated and blacks played in the "Negro leagues". He went on to play for 10 years.
