Hugo was born in Italy and immigrated to United States of America when he was 14 years old. He came to America with his older sister Evelyn. Their mother had died at age of 28. He was only 4 years old then. His father remarried a stepmother who didn't really like Hugo or his sister. His father and new wife went on to have 5 more boys. Hugo worked at young age as a musician playing the French horn with his uncle in a band to make money. Later he became a very successful hairdresser and taught the art of hairdressing. He had his own business in Washington D.C. and later, in Miami, Fl. He was a very spiritual man who valued family, hard work, music, and honesty. He was also a very kind person. He had a respect for education and was an intellectual. He loved to read the newspaper and to discuss what was going on in news, community and politics with his wife and friends. He loved to sing opera. He worked hard but also made it a point to rest each day. The family dinner was very important were his four children sat around the dinner table with Hugo and his wife Theresa to discuss whatever was going on with the children's lives or the parents. His children never saw or heard Hugo or Theresa fighting or arguing. Hugo tended to look down on drunkards as people who did not have self-control. Same with smokers, although he kept this opinion to himself- only telling his children that smoking was a very dirty habit as many of his employees were smokers. He loved to joke around and was a prankster. He was a very lovable and respectable person and I miss him very much. He loved to walk with his wife after dinner around the neighborhood. He often carried a large stick while on these walks, in case any dogs in the neighborhood that were running lose became a threat so he could defend himself and his wife. Unfortunately he began to show subtle signs of memory loss in his late 60's. Eventually Alzheimer's disease stole my father Hugo from me.. it was so sad. But he continued to walk a lot up to the last year of his life. During the last 6 years of his life he lost the ability to speak, however one day when mom had the classical and opera music playing which was almost always on, Hugo suddenly burst into song in Italian! My mom and I looked at each other with our mouths wide open in shock and disbelief and then burst into laughter. Good old Dad... he had to get one last song in before he went onto to heaven where he is now.. with his wife and waiting for his children and grandchildren to eventually join him in that mansion in the sky with Lord Jesus! Until that joyous day
  • Nationality & Locations

I'm not sure of the exact city but the country was Italy until age 14. I think his stepmom must've sent Hugo and his sister away to live with an uncle. The stepmom didn't like them at all. Then it was USA. Then it was Washington DC USA. Then it was Florida USA as Dad loved the warmth of the sun... he hated scraping that ice off the car windows!!! Every year when I was little Hugo would pack up the station wagon and we would all take that drive to Highlands, NC for two weeks for the summer vaca. It was such fun! No seatbelts then! Just 4 kids in the back playing and bickering and asking, "Are we there yet?" as kids will do. We learned to enjoy the ride.. no video games, no car tv... just watching the scenery go by and daydreaming or doing crossword puzzles or singing songs or counting license plates. What a simpler time it was!
  • Early Life & Education

Don't know... it was in Italy. Not sure about college... my mom used to say Dad finished two years of college but not sure. A lot of his documents were in Italian and my brothers took most of them all when my parents passed away and I haven't seen either my brothers nor the documents since. I do know Hugo (my dad) had a hairdresser's license he always kept current.
  • Religious Beliefs

Yes.. Dad was a Catholic.. and we always had a big beautiful bible in the living room with gorgeous pictures. However we rarely went to church except for holidays. I later found out... long after Dad passed away, that he had been married and divorced before he met my mother - a family secret! So since the Catholic church frowns on divorce.. that explains a lot. In fact... how did so many people keep such a secret back then? If it wasn't for Legacy.com I never would have known! Boy could those oldtimers keep secrets!!! Loose lips sink ships.. Today it's totally opposite- tell all!
  • Military Service

No, although he was registered for draft as required, he did not participate in the military. His life was impacted by the war I'm sure.
  • Professional Career

Hugo was a musician and then a hairdresser and much later a real estate broker. He owned his own hairdressing business and before that played in a band for a living as a teenager, after that he also taught hairdressing which is how he met my mother who was a student of his!
  • Personal Life & Family

His family- that's where his passion was- especially since his mother passed away when he was just 4 years old.
